"We initially approached the Digital Product Passport as a regulatory requirement — but quickly realized it could be much more: a completely new, interactive touchpoint with our customers. Through the Digital Product Passport, we can bring so many strengths of our brands to life and create a more intensive dialogue with our customers. For us, it’s clear: within our strategy, we do not want to see the Digital Product Passport merely as a legal obligation, but as a true brand channel. It allows us to make our strong brand foundation — built on trust, quality, and consistency — tangible and engaging. This way, we can continue to surprise our customers and respond to their needs in new ways. We are excited about this future of digital customer interaction!"

Frequently asked questions

FAQ - Digital product passport for the cosmetics industry

What benefits does the Digital Product Passport offer specifically for cosmetics brands?

The DPP enables full transparency regarding ingredients, origin, and sustainability factors — topics that are especially important to customers when purchasing cosmetics. At the same time, it unlocks new marketing, CRM, and service opportunities directly at the product.

Is the Digital Product Passport mandatory for cosmetics products?

Starting in 2026, the EU will introduce the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which will be supplemented by delegated acts. These include both information requirements (e.g., ingredients, recycling, origin) and performance requirements (quality and safety standards). In the medium term, the DPP will become part of the regulatory framework for many cosmetics categories.

How does the DPP work in retail or at the point of sale?

Customers scan a code on the packaging with their smartphone and instantly access key information: ingredients, active substance profiles, usage instructions, compatibility, tips, test reports, or brand stories. This builds trust — and increases purchase intent.

What data must be provided for the DPP?

For legally required disclosures under the ESPR, companies must provide at least:

  • Information on ingredients and their origin
  • Safety and compliance data (e.g., according to the EU Cosmetics Regulation)
  • Recycling and disposal information
  • Quality and performance data

In addition, voluntary information can be included, such as marketing content, tutorials, how-to videos, or product stories.

The DPP clearly distinguishes between mandatory regulatory information and voluntary additional content, ensuring both transparency and regulatory compliance.

Can the DPP be customized to match the brand’s design?

Yes. The DPP can be fully adapted to your brand’s corporate identity — including colors, visual language, and storytelling. Each product becomes a consistent, interactive touchpoint — online and offline — seamlessly integrated into the customer journey.
