What does the Digital Product Passport bring to the battery industry?

Digital product passport in the battery industry

Digital product passport in the battery industry: proof of origin, CO2 footprint, recyclability, and numerous customer services directly at the battery.

For consumers: Tested safety, transparency and reliable information

For manufacturers and retailers: new insights, traceability and growing customer trust

Requirements & Opportunities

Transparency about materials, origins, and performance data is becoming mandatory – and at the same time an opportunity for credible communication and brand trust.

Take-back and recycling systems, second-life and refurbishment models strengthen the circular economy and extend the usage cycle of batteries.

Digital touchpoints on the battery enable direct customer dialogue, service integration and differentiation in the market – both online and at the POS.

Digital Product Passport for the Battery Industry: Mandatory, Opportunity, Competitive Advantage

The Digital Product Passport will become a mandatory EU requirement in the battery industry , opening up new opportunities for transparency and sustainable value creation. The EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542) requires battery manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers to provide digital product data for traction batteries, industrial batteries, and many storage systems starting in 2027. The goal is to promote sustainability, transparency, and resource efficiency along the entire supply chain.

What does the EU regulation mean for the battery industry? The ESPR regulation stipulates that battery manufacturers will provide the following information digitally in the future:

  • Product life cycle data and ecodesign

  • Carbon footprint and sustainability indicators

  • Extended Digital Product Passport

  • Disclosure obligations for disposal and recycling

  • Labeling requirements

The measure not only affects large manufacturers – suppliers, retailers, and distributors in the battery industry must also rethink their data structures and invest in new forms of customer communication. Additional requirements for batteries are imposed by the EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542): not only manufacturing companies, but also importers, authorized representatives, and contractual partners who offer batteries in the EU.

The Digital Product Passport Battery can become a service hub beyond the mere obligation to provide information:

  • Digital assembly instructions & care information

  • Access to spare parts & second life platforms

  • Product stories & sustainability communication on the shelf

RND provides context – with reputable voices from industry and research.

Using SEINE Battery Systems and Narravero as examples, effort translates into results: clean data instead of PDFs, process improvements, take-back and second-life storage in stationary storage systems – all the way to efficient recycling. IW and Bosch identify the hurdles (standards, supply chains, SMEs) – and why these are precisely the levers for circular economy and competitiveness.

Why Narravero is ideal for the battery industry:

With its Lifecycle Companion System, Narravero makes batteries intelligently visible – from production to the circular economy.

Cleverly networking product data – from raw materials to recycling

Narravero provides comprehensive battery information in one place: material structure, raw material source, performance data, safety features, disposal – all centrally accessible and available at any time.

Digital touchpoints directly on the battery

Using QR or NFC, every battery becomes a digital service point. Users receive charging instructions, safety information, spare parts, and recycling information at their fingertips.

Consistent sustainability communication throughout the life cycle

The Digital Product Passport accompanies the battery from production to recycling – thereby strengthening trust in the brand and ESG reporting.

Immediately EU-ready – with a future-proof setup

Narravero meets the upcoming requirements of the EU ESPR regulation while simultaneously offering marketing, service, and sales potential. A system that combines obligation and opportunity.
