Digital product passport in the cosmetics industry: Mandatory & new opportunities

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) in the cosmetics industry is becoming mandatory in the EU – and an opportunity for transparency, customer proximity, and innovation. According to the EU Commission, the Digital Product Passport is part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation ( ESPR ), which aims to promote sustainability throughout the product life cycle.

EU Digital Product Passport for Cosmetics: The requirements of the ESPR Regulation apply to cosmetic products once they are defined as priority product groups. Cosmetics manufacturers must then disclose:

  • Ingredients & Origin

  • Packaging & CO₂ footprint

  • Disposal & recyclability

Other regulations also affect the cosmetics industry:

  • The Packaging Ordinance (PPWR) requires transparent information on packaging components, recycled content and take-back systems.

  • The REACH and CLP regulations set out requirements for the communication of hazardous ingredients – in future, this will be digitally bundled in the product passport.

The Digital Product Passport becomes the central medium for cosmetic ingredient transparency, packaging communication and ESG-compliant brand management – across borders, standards and systems.

Requirements & Opportunities

Ingredient transparency and sustainability communication play a central role; this provides an opportunity for clear product information and trust.

Building trust and differentiation on the shelf through digital product passports – a clear competitive advantage through unprecedented proximity to the customer.

Regulatory safeguards and EU compliance are crucial, and the DPP supports this with legally compliant implementation.

Beauty pioneer for digital customer interaction

"We initially viewed the Digital Product Passport as a regulatory requirement – but quickly realized that it could be much more: a completely new, interactive touchpoint with our customers. Through the Digital Product Passport, we can bring many of our brands' strengths to life – and stimulate an even more intensive dialogue with our customers. One thing is clear to us: as part of our strategy, we want to view the Digital Product Passport as a brand channel not just as a legal requirement, but also to make our strong brand foundation, which exudes trust, quality, and consistency, tangible through the Digital Product Passport, thus continually surprising our customers with their wishes. We look forward to this future of digital customer interaction!"
