What does the Digital Product Passport bring to the food industry?

Digital product passport in the food industry

The Digital Product Passport in the food industry creates new transparency along the entire value chain – from the origin of ingredients to packaging. At the same time, it becomes a digital access point for sustainability communication, additional information, and brand experiences.

For consumers: More clarity on ingredients, origin, CO₂ footprint and environmental impact

For brands & retailers: Differentiation through digital services, reporting advantages and new communication areas

EU Digital Product Passport Food: What is changing

As part of the EU's ESPR regulation, digital product traceability is becoming the new standard. While food products themselves are not yet explicitly covered, this applies particularly to packaging – for example, for:

  • Disposable packaging, composite materials & reusable containers

  • Packaging design with an environmental focus

  • Labeling of return systems & recyclability

The EU Strategy for Sustainable Packaging and Farm to Fork are also promoting digital solutions for transparency and sustainability – also as a voluntary standard for food brands.

If implemented cleverly, the Digital Product Passport in the food industry will create added value for brands, retailers and end consumers:

  • Transparency of ingredients and origin – directly accessible via QR code

  • Packaging information, CO₂ labelling & return options digitally accessible

  • Brand values, origin story & recipe ideas – integrated into a digital product experience

Requirements & Opportunities

Ingredients, origin and packaging transparency are becoming a competitive factor – and enable new forms of brand communication.

Packaging return, reusable packaging, and CO₂ tracking strengthen circular models and ESG reports.

Digital product access opens up new touchpoints – from the supermarket to the refrigerator.
